Well I finally went on my first fly fishing trip. I drove down to Waco yesterday morning and a buddy and I went out on the middle bosque river. We canoed about 7 miles down the river periodically getting out when we spotted some white bass. It was an amazing experience and one heck of a fishing trip. It is crazy how those white bass never leave. Even after you catch a few of their friends they still migrate back to the exact same spot. This is a picture of my first ever catch on a fly rod. What a great day!!

Hey guys,

I was out ont he Pedernales this weekend looking for some white bass.

I went down to Reimer's Ranch and the water was high with a pretty quick current. The water is still a little cold so the white bass run hasn't really kicked off yet, but there were some fish being caught.

I was using a full sinking line and still having trouble getting down deep enough because of the current and water levels. I caught one white bass, but dropped him while attempting to take a picture with my phone (almost dropped the phone too).

I also caught this carp while I was out there. It was alot of fun on my 5wt outfit!

Anyway, I haven't been making it out as much lately as I would like, but I'll keep the reports coming when I do get a chance to wet a line.

In the past I had sucess both up river from the 16 bridge and going downstream about a half mile. I think that's refered to as "Texas Bend" or "The Bend." There is a hole just below the bridge where people seem to congregate which was never appealing to me. Stocker trout are what they are size-wise. I would suggest trying a weekday if possible. You might want to take along a larger weight rod and get nearer the dam for the strippers while you're there. Have fun!

Thanks for the info guys.... Been down there a few times and not caught much... Few small trout but nothin to brag about. I know they are stocked but I have got to be doin somethin wrong... Use Zebra Nymphs, Bead Head Prince nymphs and actually was down there the weekend after the first stocking this year and there was a hatch.... I had a dry to match but just don't think it was small enough!!! Anyway, like I said thanks for the info!

Hey Kirk,

Ron's spot on. I fished just below the dam with Stephen this summer for Stripper and he talked alot about the winter stocking. He's a total fly fishing nut and will happily talk your ear off. I would expect he's in the know on what patterns are working best and how the fishing has been.

If you get a chance to go I'd love to hear how it is. I've been thinking of making the trip up there to fish with a couple of friends from Ft. Worth.

Hi Alex,

So in the context below what I mean by "a clean drift" is that the fly was not getting hung up on the bottom of the river. More generally speaking though, "a clean drift" is referring to any time your fly is moving with the current in a natural looking fashion. For example, when your fly gets snagged on the bottom of the river, it looks very unnatural and you are sure not to catch a fish. As another example, if you have your line drifting below your fly, it creates extra drag and can make the fly look unnatural because it will be moving at a differnt speed from the rest of the things floating in the current. So, from the examples above, your fly will best achieve a "clean drift" when it is suspended in the water (not right on the bottom) and moving freely with the current (no drag).

As for colors of your flies, black, olive, and brown/tan are great places to start, but it always takes some experimenting to figure out what's working on any given day. I think you'll find that the colors and types of flies that are successful will change depending on a number of variables. What bugs are hatching, the water clarity, and the weather conditions can all play a roll in what you'll want to use. Over time you'll figure out your local streams and get a good sense of what to fish and when. I've heard many people say that a great way to learn more about what to use on a river is to turn a couple of rocks over until you find some bugs and then start with a fly that is about the same size and color.

Here's a link I found that adresses the color and selection process a little more:

I would love to help you bring an interest in fly fishing to Georgia so please let me know anytime I can help. Definitely keep us posted on how it is going for you as well. I couldn't help but be a little excited thinking that the Georgian rivers have lots of fish in them!
