Just got back from Colorado. While I was there I did some snow shoeing for the first time. I have to say it was a lot of fun and would recommend it if you don't mind the colder weather.

I am hoping that in a couple of weeks to get some free time to do something with the dogs. I am thinking about heading down to Lawton in late March any advice or things to consider before i attempt my first actual trip here. Main thing, Do I need a permit? lol i know a basic question and, Do they allow dogs? That is all Thanks for your input.

I just got back from my trial trip with the dogs new gear and my loaded pack not sure on the weight right now but I'll get back to you guys on that. I now have a fairly good picture for my profile. It is a little off side but I like it. I hiked the soldier creek nature trails right here in Midwest City. They are about 10 miles long if you hike the whole thing. I hiked half 1/2 to 3/4 of it. I would have hiked it all but I have to go to work at 3:00 and was not sure of my pace or how long it would take to get the dogs unpacked when I got home. The dog with the reed pack and grey face decided he wanted to walk through a puddle and instead of walking he went swimming. It wasn't a big puddle but apparently deep. He likes to walk through water and lay in it but wont swim. Odd labrador I also got some pictures of some mushrooms not real good , I am no photographer but anyways.

Anyways I cant wait to go on a real trip now but have fun. I have to get ready for work.

Well David I can recommend one area within 4-5 hrs that's in the Ozark's. Roaring River State Park in Missouri. I would take time to explore the hatchery as the river is 100% spring feed from a cave and it's beautiful. It has ton's of trails, fire towers and lookouts, horse trails and plenty of camp sites if you want to car camp and hike as well. Some trails range from just a mile or so (near the trout hatchery) or up to twenty. The scenery is great as it is in the Ozark Mountains and it butts up to part of the MarkTwain National Park. There are also lakes in the region and Branson is within and hours drive. Table Rock Lake is within 10 minutes but the waters COLD even in summer do to all the springs in the area.
Hope this helps a little.

Once I have a couple of days off from work i will have to find a few places to go thats my main problem right now. I like backpacking and there are very few places to go in Oklahoma. I have found the Witchata wildlife refuge and other places like that but i did a 10 mile hike here in the city in 3 1/2 hours and i bet i could do that in a day with a full pack but all the trails around here are like 8 to 10 miles. Its frustrating not being able to find a good hiking spot in this state with all the pretty scenery and views that i have seen. The ouchita national park is nice (I know I spelled it wrong but oh well.) The area has over 700 miles of trail problem is about 4 hour drive and most of the trails are strait trails not loops. I know I am being picky but I am trying to make it fun so that my fiance will be more inclined to go with me right now she doesn't think she will enjoy it.

This is for all people living in the Midwest. I live in Wichita and so I am not too far away from you. I frequently head to Oklahoma for camping and canoe trips. I think you will fit right in here.

Ok this group is a bit far for me to drive but on the long shot that you guys are heading south I am joining your group let me know if I have a place here. I am a novice backpacker in Oklahoma City and I am looking for overnight trips. I like to take my 2 lovable labs with me. They are novice packers themselves.

Having lived in the KC region for the better part of 30yrs I have camped many of the local, state, and national parks in Missouri mainly and some in Kansas and Nebraska.
My wife and I have been exploring National Parks within a days drive recently as well as some not so close.
I can help you find trails short and long, campsites on and off the trail as well as some cabin spots. I can recomend Lakes, some places for horseback riding and some great touristy/family spots like fish hatchery's and some decent fishing spots for fly fishers (trout). I can also recommend a few float trips but as Missouri only has two rivers with class two white water that I know of it will just be that " a float trip". I have tons of info on float groups in colorado if your feeling like making a weekend of it and dont mind driving 10 hrs or so.

Feel free to shoot me a message if you want some suggestions or help finding a place or activity I'll do what I can to help. I know what it is like to have trouble finding places and to be a "Stranger in a strange land" so don't be afraid to ask. Worste that could happen is that I don't know.

I have heard of both places but have never been there.

Anyone ever camp at the Deroin Bend or Lower Hamburg Bend Conservation Areas along the Missouri river?
